The Division Bell cover is one of the cleverest things Storm Thorgerson ever put on a record sleeve — two metal heads facing each other in profile, which read as a third face looking straight at you once you notice it. Fans have been pointing that out to each other for thirty years and it still catches people.
That makes it a good patch. Plenty of album artwork is bold and instantly readable, which has its place, but this one rewards a second look. It’ll start conversations with anyone who hasn’t spotted the trick yet.
Small patches are what give a jacket its character. A big piece across the back sets the tone, and then the smaller ones gather around it over the years — a sleeve, a chest pocket, a bag strap — each added at its own moment. The jacket builds up slowly instead of arriving finished.
It isn’t just for jackets either. Denim vests, backpacks, tote bags, caps, the lining of a guitar case.
Released in 1994, The Division Bell was the last Pink Floyd album with Gilmour, Mason and Wright together. A fitting one to sew on and keep.
