Lemmy’s bass is as much a part of Motörhead’s identity as his voice. Played like a rhythm guitar, run through the wrong amps on purpose, turned up until it became the whole band’s bottom end and most of its top. Putting that instrument across the back of a jacket is a sharper choice than the logo — it points at how the music actually sounded.
Back patches are the foundation piece. You pick one, you sew it on, and everything else arranges itself around it over the following years. The jacket becomes a slow record of what you listened to and where you went, and nothing in a wardrobe works quite the same way.
The sewing is part of the deal. There’s no shortcut version of this, which is exactly why a finished jacket means something. An hour with a needle and it’s there for good. Denim and leather both hold a patch this size well, and a cut-off vest works just as happily.
Lemmy played the same way for forty years and never apologised for any of it. A patch on a jacket that gets worn into the ground is about the most fitting tribute going.
