Lemmy formed Motörhead in 1975, and the 50th design marks exactly that stretch. It’s an anniversary worth wearing across your shoulders, not least because almost nobody expected the band to see out the seventies, let alone five decades.
Anniversary artwork makes an interesting back patch. Album covers tie you to one record and one year. A fiftieth marks the whole run — every lineup, every tour, the entire thing — which suits a band that never really had eras so much as one long continuous argument with the volume knob.
The back piece is the decision that shapes a jacket. It goes on first and everything else gathers around it, smaller patches picked up at shows and in shops over the years, until the whole thing reads as a record of where you’ve been rather than something bought in one go.
Sewing it on takes an hour and there’s no shortcut, which is exactly why a finished jacket means something. Denim and leather both hold a patch this size well, and a cut-off vest works just as happily.
Fifty years of everything louder than everyone else. Worth the needle and thread.
