Bastards was Motörhead’s eleventh album, released in 1993 into a music scene that had largely moved on and didn’t much care. It’s since become one of the records fans point to when they want to make a case for the band’s later years. Choosing it for a back patch says you’ve gone past the obvious picks.
That’s the real appeal of album artwork over a logo. Anyone can wear the wordmark. A specific record, especially one that wasn’t the hit, tells other people you’ve actually listened to the catalogue rather than the greatest hits.
Back patches are the foundation of a jacket. The big piece goes on first, everything else arranges itself around it, and over the years the smaller patches fill in until the whole thing reads as a record of where you’ve been. Sewing it on takes an hour and there’s no shortcut, which is precisely why a finished jacket means something. Denim or leather both hold it well, and so does a cut-off vest.
The title alone makes it a strong choice for the biggest spot on the jacket.
